[applause] >> good evening. i would like to thank everybody for being here today. i can't hear myself. my name is michael dur an and the counseling director at the health center in san jose california. i am here to speak on behalf of gwen spriar and the american indian alliance. it was created in the 90's to provide voice to the community in santa clara valley and started by laverne robert and provides two annual powwows and numerous fundraisers. gwen has been part of the alliance for about 15 years now. gwen is a elder and retired from the american indian district titles four, seven and nine of the indian education act. she has moved beyond the limits of her duties for the families in her district. she spends time volunteers for all community functions that the alliance puts on. the families that she serves remember her fondly and all that she did for them. she offered her talents to powwows, food booths, graduations and dinners and let's watch a video on gwen stirrer. >> i am [inaudible] known as t

if their son every gets their attitude, here's poor little michael getting cranky but i think the most important thing i have learn from sean sitting here in the board of supervisors someone also who has children is as many of us do is really keeping family first and seeing you with michael and me with madison and jack and cane but really being a how you handle that and your job here with the board of supervisor and is is incredible and even some of the pictures of mike in your chair and i have some of mike and madison in my chair and i think that attribute to who you are as a person and i'll remember you not only as a mentor and personal friend, someone to look up to for what you have accomplished on the board but also someone to really respect as a father and as a husband and how you dealt with that on the board of supervisor and is so sean we are going to miss you a ton and i know that we are going to work a lot together in your new role with senior feinstein and welcome back anytime. >> thank you supervisor farrell supervisor cohen? >>> i first met sean elsburnd when i was -- s

mostly snowfall in the district and points north and west. let's take a look outside now with the michael & son weather could. we are looking at reagan national airport where all is fine right now but the clouds have started to build in. the current temperature is 38 degrees. the dew point is still well below freezing, so as any precipitation falls, i think it will actually become ice if it isn't already. so we are going to watch out for that wintry mix making its way toward us as we head through overnight hours and then it will start to actually fall before sunrise. so that snow mix is approaching. most of the snow will be during the morning hours on saturday. saturday afternoon we'll see pretty quick clearing but not before dumping some snow north and west of the city and then a wintry mix with mostly rain south and east of the city as we head into the afternoon as i mentioned before. it is already down to freezing in frederick, leesburg 36, gaithersburg 30, hagsers town 32 as well. all the area is also seeing dew points below freezing as i mentioned before, and as this rain makes it to

for a politician at all, in fact. he went for michael bennet, the superintendent of the denver public school system. bennett was, as you can imagine, excited. he was now a senator, a member of the world's most exclusive club. that is a big job. it is an impressive, big job. a job that makes you think pretty highly of yourself. what bennett was not prepared for was that when he took that big, important, impressive job, everybody would all of a sudden hate him. and they would hate him because they hate congress, and he was now part of congress, this thing that they hate. in november of 2011, bennett went down to the floor of the senate with a chart that is still one of my favorite charts of all time. it was a simple chart. it just showed how popular different things were. the irs, the people who collect taxes and audit you, 40% approval rating, unpopular. richard nixon during watergate in 1984, 24% approval. also very popular. banks that had just crashed the global financial system and were throwing tens of millions of people out of work worldwide, 23% approval, not good. paris hilton, 15% approval.

in the past 15 years. mayor michael bloomberg said there were just over 400 homicides in 2012, 100 less than in the previous year. one man knows a lot about that subject, new york city's deputy police commissioner, paul brown, who joins us live right now. mr. brown, congratulations. how have you done it? >> thank you, mainly through 35,000 men and women in uniform, but particularly through something called operation at attack where we send as many uniformed police officers as possible into areas where we have seen spikes and violence, particularly shootings. >> that sounds almost like a back to basics campaign. why was the decision taken to go in that direction? >> well, it started with mayor bloomberg and commissioner kelly coming into the office right after 9/11 with a deep downturn in the economy, less tax revenue. we lost 6000 police officers through attrition, we have 6000 fewer now than we had then. that forced us to take a look at how we deploy officers into the city. instead of dividing them up as we usually did into 76 precincts, we focused better on defining exactly where the most
